At Birstall Mills we are used to customers dropping in with questions or queries about their carpets and are always happy to help out where we can. If you are experiencing a problem with your carpet, you are not alone – below are some of the most common issues we encounter. If you are thinking about buying a new carpet we recommend bearing these points in mind so you are not left disappointed after your purchase.
1. Low quality
A low quality carpet may seem like the right price choice in the short-term but in the long-term it is likely to lead to problems and disappointment. Common critism include carpets not feeling pleasant to walk on barefoot, looking old and worn very quickly (within the first twelve months) and areas which experience high traffic being extremely visible.
2. Poor installation
Another mistake we often hear about is that a carpet has not been installed properly. Incorrect installation can lead to it being loose as well as it looking rippled. This not only stands out as being poorly fitted but can also lead to problems when trying to hoover or clean the carpet.
3. Fibre shedding
Carpet fluff is another problem that can occur. Here, a lot of fibre can come up off the carpet, especially during hoovering, reducing the pile as well as clogging up the vacuum cleaner. We recommend brushing the carpet before hoovering as this can cause the vacuum to get clogged also.
4. Underlay problems
Finally, the wrong kind of carpet Underlay can cause problems. Cheap, low quality underlay can cause headaches not only by making a kind of scrunching sound (known as the crisp packet impression) when you walk on it, but also by causing the carpet to ripple after a period due it being inadequate for the type it has been installed with. Alternatively using the wrong size underlay can also cause safety issues such as: walking on the stairs
