No matter how many house rules you have or how hard you try to look after your carpet, there will inevitably be times when accidents happen. Whether these are through a pair of shoes being left on or a clumsy moment with a glass of red wine, here are some carpet cleaning secrets from the pros:
Don’t panic and don’t rub
When a mishap occurs it can be tempting to throw water onto the stain and give it an almighty rub to try and get rid of it. However, this approach can actually make the situation worse and help to spread the stain rather than contain it. The best thing to do is blot at it gently, working from the outside in to try and remove the worst of it.
Melted wax doesn’t mean disaster
An unchecked candle can leave wax stains on your carpet that seem impossible to get rid of. Picking at them will just result in small shards of wax breaking off and the carpet threads being pulled. However, there is a simple way to resolve the situation – place a white towel over the area and iron it. The heat will warm up the wax allowing it to be removed much more easily.
Deep clean from time to time
Whilst hoovering provides a short term fix for keeping your carpet looking good, a steam clean every six months or so will help it look its best for longer. Deep cleaning ensures that any dirt nestled deep in the carpet pile is removed along with any grease that may have built up over time.
