Birstall Mills Carpets and Beds has a huge selection of domestic carpets at their Yorkshire showroom. Our carpet team are always on hand to give advice about your choice of domestic carpets, but here is a guide to consider when starting out on the search for the best type of carpet for your home.
Fabric choices –
- A luxurious natural fibre, that will be expensive, but should give good service. Wool looks and feels great for domestic carpets.
- Polyamide (nylon). Great stain resistant properties, and can be produced in brighter, more vibrant colours than wool.
- A man-made fibre that is hard-wearing and stain-resistant.
- Used primarily for textured or shag pile carpets, polyester feels very like wool, and is soft and stain resistant.
- Wool mixes. A good choice for domestic carpets in 80% wool, 20% polyamide, or polyester. Domestic carpets in these fabrics have the appearance and feel of wool, with the durability of man-made fibres.
Pile choices –
- Traditionally made woven carpets, such as Axminster or Wilton, will be luxurious and expensive, with intricate patterns.
- This is a popular choice for domestic carpets and is available in the following styles:
- Twist – a good choice for domestic carpets. Yarn is twisted together giving a hard-wearing pile in plain, or ‘heather’ shaded colours.
- Berber – a loop pile which maintains its appearance well, making it a good choice for domestic carpets .
- Flatweave – a firm looped carpet, good for stairs, but lacking the luxurious feel we expect from domestic carpets.
- Saxony, or shag pile – deep pile carpets, offering luxury for areas with light foot traffic, such as bedrooms.
- Velvet – a dense short pile luxurious tufted carpet, suitable for bedrooms.
